Super Mario Blue Screen, 2014

Super Mario Blue Screen

is an assemblage of videogames, analog video production equipment, and surveillance equipment. The Nintendo game Super Mario Bros. is superimposed on a live video image of the player using a chroma key effect in an analog video mixer. This is possible because the backgrounds in the game are either solid blue or black.

Videogames typically work through the player identifying with an on-screen avatar like Mario. In Super Mario Blue Screen, the player's identification may waver between the image and physics of Mario and the representation of their own self image.

Super Mario Blue Screen was exhibited at The White Page in Minneapolis, MN from May 16 to June 16, 2014.
